I read that breaking open vitamin E-oil capsules and spreading it on skin does wonders. Instead of buying expensive C serums, I've been breaking open capsules of C and zinc, mixing the powders with my E-oil and using it as a mask/scrub. Is this a waste of time or have I found a way to save some money?

There's a reason beauty companies hire hundreds of chemists and spend millions of dollars on research to create effective cosmetic products. Vitamins, especially, are delivered best into the skin in certain forms. Very often their best pH is acidic, or their molecules are too large to pass through the surface, or they need a particular delivery system in order to be at maximum efficiency. Breaking open internal ingestibles doesn't guarantee you any of the above. Also, you've probably realized that a big part of the fun of using cosmetics is the 'feel', the 'fragrance', the rinse off, even the application. I have a feeling that you'll be back (to the department stores).
